Sir Philip specialised in financial remedies at 1 Hare Court for nearly thirty years, of which he was a QC for ten years. In 2011, he was appointed a Judge of the High Court, Family Division, where he undertook many of the high profile financial remedy cases. He retired from the judiciary in October 2024 and has returned to Chambers to conduct private FDRs.

Sir Philip was the judge who heard the long and protracted case of Young v Young. He also dealt with the financial remedy aspects of HRH Princess Haya of Jordan v HH Sheikh Mohammed of Dubai. He was the first instance judge in Standish and Rotenberg as well as RC v JC, one of a very limited number of cases in which a spouse was awarded compensation for relationship generated disadvantage. He heard numerous cases involving pre-nuptial agreements, as well as many of the leading authorities on applications pursuant to Part III of the 1984 Act for financial remedies following an overseas divorce.

Sir Philip was Chair of the Family Law Bar Association from 2004 to 2005 and is now an Honorary Vice-President. He is a Bencher of the Inner Temple, where he was Chair of its Scholarship Committee. He was Head of Chambers at 1 Hare Court from 2007 – 2011. He was a Trustee of the single parent charity, Gingerbread, until his appointment as a judge. He is a Governor of a School in Croydon.

He was educated at Canford School in Dorset and Pembroke College, Oxford where he was an Abbott Scholar. He is now an Honorary Fellow of the College.

He is married to Gillian, has two daughters and a grandson and lives near Bromley. He is a member of MCC and a Chelsea Season Ticket holder.
